Why did you design Primal Fuel?

Primal fuel is simply a meal or snack "supplement" to be used when real food isn't an option or when convenience is more important. It is a great-tasting option designed to help people stay on track while they are adjusting to eating low-carb or in need of a quick meal or snack. Many people would like to cut grains and sugars, but are concerned they can't find enough "easy" things to have around the house for those times when they're tempted to reach for the bagel. Primal Fuel was created in response to that request.
 
What is Whey Protein Isolate?

Whey Protein Isolate (or WPI), the primary source of protein in Primal Fuel, is the gold standard in protein powders. It is derived from milk, but retains very little lactose or other milk proteins. Many studies have demonstrated the various beneficial health properties of WPI.

Why use Coconut Milk Powder?

Coconut milk powder is the primary source of fat in Primal Fuel. The benefits of coconut milk have been lauded greatly over the past decade. While the main fat in coconut is saturated (and I never met a saturated fat I didn't like), the profile breaks down to mostly short and medium chain fatty acids that tend to be burned for energy rather than stored as body fat. Some of these fatty acids (lauric and caprylic) also have proven anti-viral and anti-microbial properties. Plus, coconut milk adds a rich, creamy taste to any shake.

What is Maltodextrin?

Maltodextrin is a simple glucose polymer (two or more glucose molecules attached to each other). It is split into single glucose molecules almost instantly in the gut, making it probably the safest, most benign way to get glucose into the bloodstream. Hundreds of popular sports drinks, infant formulas, and adult nutrition beverages use maltodextrin as a main source of carbohydrate calories. Maltodextrin also happens to have properties that prevent clumping in coconut powder, which is why most (if not all) coconut powder manufacturers add tiny amounts to their raw material. There are 2 grams of maltodextrin from cassava root (representing 8 calories) in a serving of Primal Fuel as part of the coconut powder raw material. No additional maltodextrin is added.

What is Sodium Caseinate?

Sodium caseinate is a milk protein, often found in muscle-building powders and other protein drinks. Like, maltodextrin, it has anti-clumping properties that make it ideal for coconut milk powder, which is why my supplier adds it. There are no coconut milk powders available from anywhere in the world that do not contain casein. The amount in Primal Fuel is insignificant. Almost all the protein in Primal Fuel is from whey protein isolate, the gold standard in protein.

I thought you didn't like sugar. Why is there sucrose in PF?

Straight protein powder doesn't taste very good, even when blended with coconut milk. It needs flavors and sweeteners to make it palatable. I didn't want to use artificial sweeteners or HFCS or even straight fructose, so I chose to use two grams of evaporated cane juice (also known as sucrose) per serving as a sweetener, as well as a little natural stevia. Two grams is half a teaspoon and represents 8 calories. I simply went with the common name sucrose instead of evaporate cane juice. And yes, Grok would have definitely eaten evaporated cane juice when he came across some.

What are Prebiotic Fibers?

While many people know about probiotics, the healthy gut bacteria (or healthy "flora") that are an important part of the immune system, many people are unaware of prebiotics%u2014the soluble fibers that act as food for the healthy bacteria in the gut. Unlike insoluble fibers (like whole wheat fibers, etc) that generally pass through the intestines undigested and can actually harm the digestive tract, soluble prebiotic fibers like inulin and guar gum can promote the growth of healthy gut bacteria and, in turn, help rid the gut of the unhealthy bacteria that cause disease. The fermentation of these prebiotic fibers results in the production of favorable short chain fatty acids.

I heard Coconut Milk can have laxative properties.

Some people report that coconut milk can occasionally have a mild laxative effect on them. In some of those people, the issue may be related to poor prior gut health, which Primal Fuel may help address over time. Nevertheless, if you discover you are someone who is overly sensitive to coconut milk, simply start with a smaller amount (say, one scoop, instead of two) in your first batch or two, then work up to the regular serving size (or more).

How often should I consume Primal Fuel?
